"Fanaticism" vs. Fanaticism

When Irish Catholics came to the northeast U.S. in the mid-19th century they were greeted by 'nativist' Know Nothing mobs led by Lewis Charles Levin, the first Judaic man elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, who used his power and influence to 'suppress' Irish Catholic 'religious fanaticism' and 'loyalty to a foreign power.'

160 years later, the U.S. faces a very real threat from very real fanatics with a very real loyalty to a foreign power. Irish Catholics never did anything remotely approaching the damage Zionists are causing to this nation, yet, to 'suppress their fanaticism' they were attacked and their churches were burned by a mob led by a fanatical 'eternally persecuted,' self-chosen, Lewis Charles Levin.

I'm one of those Irish Catholic 'fanatics' who doesn't want mob violence or synagogues burned, but this Judaic fanaticism has to stop if there's to be any hope for this country and for our children. Nothing good can come of this for anyone.

It's searing hot, but there's some pleasantness about the stone-flagged path rising from the centre of Silwan, Jerusalem. Maybe it's the breeze, or the stone houses oozing coolness into the air, or maybe it's the wide-open mountain landscape. There are three of us – Ilan, the director, Michael, the cameraman and me, the interviewee. We're making a film on the blatant institutional discrimination against the residents of this Palestinian east-Jerusalem neighbourhood; authorities favour the Jewish settlers who are not hiding their desire to Judaise the neighbourhood, to void it of its Palestinian character.

Even before we position the camera, a group of orthodox Jewish girls, aged about eight to 10, come walking up the path in their ankle-long skirts, pretty, chattering, carefree. One of them slows down beside us, and pleasantly asks us if we want to film her. What would you like to tell us, we ask. I want to say that Jerusalem belongs to us Jews, she says as she walks on, only it's a pity there are Arabs here. The messiah will only come when there isn't a single Arab left here. She walks on, and her girlfriends giggle and rejoin her.

Two minutes later a young, well-built young man comes up, carrying a weapon and a radio, without any uniform or tag upon his clothes. Even before he opens his mouth I'm already guessing he's a security guard, an employee of the private security contractor operated by settlers but sponsored by the housing ministry at an annual budget of NIS 40m (£4.6m). This security company has long since become a private militia policing the entire neighbourhood and intimidating the Palestinian residents without any legal basis whatsoever. A committee set up by a housing minister determined that this arrangement was to cease, and the security of both Palestinian and Jewish residents must be handed over to the Israeli national police. The government endorsed the committee's conclusions in 2006, but recanted six months later, under settler pressure. The private security contractor went on operating.

What are you doing here, the guy asks us. What are you doing here, I reply. I'm a security guard, now tell me what are you doing here, he says, growing more irate. It's none of your business, I reply. What's your name, he asks. What's your name, I answer. It doesn't matter, he says, I'm a security guard. So my name doesn't matter either, I reply. The security guy, visibly annoyed, resorts to conversing with his radio. If we were Palestinians, we'd have cleared the street at first notice. That's the unwritten rule. But we are Hebrew-speaking Israelis. It's a problem. The operation centre apparently explains our man that we're on public ground and there's little he can do about it. He positions himself nearby with his gun, not leaving us the entire trip.

We move on. A few minutes later two teenage girls, aged 17 or 18, come walking up the path. They're not orthodox, and one can see that they're not local. One of them stops in front of the camera. Film me, she pleads. Would you like to be interviewed, we ask. She says yes. She's from the town of Gan Yavne, and came to visit Jerusalem, City of David. Why here, we ask. Because this is where King David was, she says. It's a very important place for the Jewish people. It's such a shame there are Arabs here, though. But very soon all the Arabs will be dead, God willing, and all of Jerusalem will be ours. She walks on.

Two minutes pass by, and an ultra-orthodox Jewish family comes striding up the path. The husband, all in black, asks Ilan: say, do both Jews and Arabs live in this neighbourhood? Both Palestinians and Jews, Ilan replies, but most residents are Palestinians. It's only temporary, the ultra-Orthodox man reassures him, pretty soon there won't be a single Arab left here.

I exchanged glances with Ilan and Michael. We've been here for less than 15 minutes, we haven't asked anyone on what they feel about Arabs or the future of Jerusalem, we only stood for a short while in the street. Hate flowed toward us like a river to the sea, freely, naturally. Do you think, I ask Ilan, that we'll run into someone who'll say something positive, something human, something kind about human beings? Forget human, Ilan replies, I wonder if we'll run into someone who'll be content to just say something nice about the clear Jerusalem air.

Silwan. Remember that name. Its violence will soon overshadow that of Hebron.

Will Benedict's "Pilgrimage" Boost "Israel's" Image or Destroy His Own?

On May 11, 2009 at Yad Vashem "Holocaust" Memorial Temple, Pope Benedict said "May the names of these victims never perish! May their suffering never be denied, belittled, or forgotten!" What a boon for the Israelis who need so desperately for the suffering they've caused so many Palestinians outside the gates of Yad Vashem to be minimized, denied and forgotten.

Or, will this shameful act result, rather, in Benedict sharing in counterfeit Israel's infamy as it should?

Lying Rabbi of the Wailing Wall Insists Pope Remove Pectoral Cross

For the "elder brother" rabbis, maintaining their deception of Christians while remaining true to their traditions of hatred for Jesus Christ and Christian symbols is a thorny matter. The Wailing Wall Rabbi, Shmuel Rabinovitch, who is often seen in photos of world leaders prostrating themselves at the wall in Jerusalem, will ultimately defer to the Chief Rabbinate on how to deal with the Pope's pectoral cross. A Heartwarming Elder Brother Tale

In 2000, when JPII made his visit to the Wailing Wall, Judaism was not at its present level of ascendancy. Rabbi Rabinovitch didn't cause a commotion over JPII's pectoral cross as he has during recent visits from bishops and in anticipation of the upcoming Benedict XVI visit. Now, Judaism is much stronger in the Israeli state and around the world and its dispensational component laid out by Maimonides in the Mishneh Torah and in other rabbinic texts is coming into play. Not only is Rabbi Rabinovitch attempting to prevent Benedict XVI from wearing his pectoral cross, he's also brazenly lying in an attempt to blot out the indisputable fact that JPII wore his pectoral cross at the Western Wall in 2000 to make it appear as if there's no change in his current stance which is a move closer towards rabbinic mandates on "idolatry."

When one of Rabbi Rabinovitch's superior rabbis decides for him how this matter should be handled the decision will be based in Maimonides' code of situation ethics: if upholding the true mandates of Judaism pertaining to Christian "idolaters" and their "idols" threatens to cause "The Jews" to be viewed badly or suffer hostility then it's permissible to make an exception. But the fact that the matter is now open for discussion is a clear sign that the momentum is towards the rabbinic ideal.

Even though the Vatican says it has received no formal request for the Pope to remove his golden crucifix during his visit to the Wall, Rabbi Rabinovitch's comments are bound to raise tensions on the eve of the trip. Israel's Foreign Ministry tried to smooth the waters by saying in a statement that "in accordance with rules of hospitality and dignity," the State of Israel will not prevent the Pope from wearing his cross when he visits the Western Wall.

But it is the rabbis rather than the government who hold sway at the Western Wall, and Rabbi Rabinovitch has twice previously turned away Christian delegations. In November 2007 he refused to let Austrian bishops near the wall after they would not remove or conceal their crosses, and in May 2008 he refused a request from a group of Irish bishops and prelates to visit the site. "They wanted to wear their crosses openly," Rabinovitch says ...

Explaining the intensity of feeling over the quintessential symbol of Christianity, Rabbi Ron Kronish, director of the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel, a Jerusalem group promoting religious dialogue, says that there exists among ultra-Orthodox Jews "a certain allergy towards the cross." Asking the Pope to remove his cross, he says, is "part of the ongoing paranoia of Jewish history ..."

Rabinovitch was in charge of the Western Wall during the visit of the late Pope John Paul II in 2000, when the pontiff prayed and twisted a written message into the cracks of the ancient stones, observing the Jewish belief that all prayers made at the Wall are answered. Rabbi Rabinovitch insists that John Paul II did not wear a visible crucifix during his visit to the site, but photographs taken during that visit clearly show the Polish Pope wearing his familiar golden cross as he touched the wall, head bowed ...

It's possible that the fuss over the Pope's cross will blow over before Benedict arrives, since Rabinovitch's edict could be overruled by Israel's two chief rabbis [Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar], who are more politically attuned to the questions of the country's international image ...

Ultra-Orthodox vigilantes spread fear in Jerusalem

Shaking as she recalled her brutal beating at the hands of Jewish ultra-Orthodox vigilantes, a 28-year-old Jerusalem woman who would only identify herself as M. said she feared for her life.

Some residents say the self-styled "modesty squads" are spreading terror among those seen as straying from the strict moral code demanded of the ultra-Orthodox in the more conservative neighbourhoods of the Holy City.

There life revolves largely around the study of holy texts and a strict dress code that has men sporting black coats and wide-brimmed hats and women covering their heads, arms and legs.

Two weeks ago police arrested two alleged members of a modesty patrol accused of brutally beating M.

The gang allegedly gagged her, hit her, kicked her and said she would be killed if she did not move out of the ultra-Orthodox Maalot Dafna neighbourhood.

"They beat me up, tied me up and threatened to kill me," M. said, holding back her tears. "Who will prevent them from killing me?"

Neighbours had complained of what they called the divorcee's "indecent" lifestyle, which in such neighbourhoods can mean anything from wearing trousers to meeting men in private.

"I don't know why I was treated this way. What has my life got to do with those guys," said M., who until three years ago was married to a Haredi -- a word used to describe the most theologically conservative form of Judaism.

Police have also detained a man accused of torching a store in an ultra-Orthodox district that sold what some residents considered "immoral" clothing.

In Mea Shearim, a Haredi bastion where streets are sealed off for the Jewish day of rest and satellite dishes are considered a sign of heresy, an electronics store has become the latest target of the morality squads.

A young man, sporting the distinctive Haredi sidecurls, beard, black garb and hat, stood outside the store handing out pamphlets.

He said the store was threatening the morals of the community by selling MP4 players that would allow buyers to view indecent movies in their homes.

"This shop corrupts the neighbourhood youth," the man said. "We will fight until they stop selling these impure devices."

David, a salesman at the store, said he is an Orthodox Jew but believes that the protesters who have picketed outside for weeks "are spreading terror in the neighbourhood".

"They burned down our stocks, nothing will stop them," he said, declining to give his family name for fear of being singled out for attack.

In June, a 14-year-old Mea Sharim resident was taken to hospital with burns after an attacker hurled acid at her.

Israeli media said that at the time of the attack the girl had been wearing loose-fitting trousers and a short-sleeved shirt, enough to provoke the ire of religious fanatics.

In 2006, a 50-year-old American-Israeli woman was viciously attacked by four men because she refused to go to the back of a bus while on holiday in Jerusalem. The bus was not one of the sex-segregated lines Jerusalem runs to accommodate Haredi preferences.

In addition to violence within the Haredi community, Israel has also seen tensions between religious and secular Jews over the course of its 60-year history.

The ultra-Orthodox have led violent protests against swimming pools, cinemas and other establishments they consider immoral for failing to segregate the sexes or sacrilegious for opening on the Sabbath.

Meny Schwartz, who heads the religious Kol Haredi radio station, said the modesty patrols have been around for years, with the full approval of religious leaders, but appear to have become increasingly violent.

"For some weeks we've been seeing excesses," he said.
