Lawyer Alan Shatter, Ireland's only Jewish member of parliament, has become Minister of Justice, Equality and Defence in the country's new government.

The new prime minister, Enda Kenny, has appointed Mr Shatter in his coalition of the centre-right Fine Gael and the Irish Labour Party. Mr Shatter is MP for Dublin South, where most of Dublin's Jewish community live.

Just 60, Mr Shatter was first elected to the Dail, the Irish parliament, in 1981, but lost his seat at the 2002 general election. He was re-elected in 2007.

He is the author of many Private Member's bills which were subsequently enacted into law in Ireland, particularly in the areas of health, sport and justice. He is also former president of the Irish Council Against Blood Sports. [But is he against kosher slaughter?]

President Shimon Peres met Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Thursday and the two exchanged some warm words. Peres was on hand to deliver a speech at an international conference organized by former United States President Bill Clinton.

Upon meeting the Israeli president Palin told him she has wanted to meet him and get to know him for years. She added that the only flag in her office, aside from the American flag, is the Israeli flag, stressing that she wants Israelis to know that she's been a longtime friend of the Jewish state, and will remain such.

Peres also took the opportunity to briefly speak to Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, who referred to the Israeli president as a longtime friend.

Also Thursday, Peres met with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and harshly criticized the decision to allow Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to deliver his UN speech. Peres said the address was embarrassing, stressing that people like Ahmadinejad must not be provided an international platform by the UN.

Peres added that Iran's views are perceived as radical even in some Arab states. The UN secretary general listened to Peres' words but did not respond.

Bishops Operate Zionist Safety Valve

EDITOR'S NOTE: Already "truth seekers" have seized upon this article as evidence that Rome represents some kind of opposition to Zionism. This is laughable. The German Bishops are only briefly opening the safety valve and releasing some of the pressure which has built up in Europe due to ever increasing awareness of, and anger with Zionist warmongering and brutality.

What criticism do the Bishops level here that wasn't true decades before the Vatican acknowledged and opened relations with "Israel"? Compare this with the position of Pope St. Pius X who refused to acknowledge the Zionist movement before "Israel's" atrocities even began. Pope St. Pius X's rejection of Zionism was theological. He said that he could not state otherwise than to reject Zionism. This needs to be understood.

Note that in the midst of all the "harsh criticism" by the German Bishops one of the fundamental tenets of Zionist propaganda is upheld: "'Israel's' right to exist." But Pope St. Pius X stated that Catholics could never sanction the Zionist movement. Which is the true Catholic position?

These German Bishops are no opposition to Zionism and their criticisms won't make a bit of difference. Catholics need to begin to understand that the notion that the anti-Biblical, warmongering, racial supremacist little state that calls itself "Israel" "has a right to exist" on someone else's land is absolutely contrary to Catholicism.

BERLIN - "This morning we saw pictures of the Warsaw ghetto at Yad Vashem and this evening we are going to the Ramallah ghetto." Several hours earlier on Sunday you probably would not have heard German Bishop Gregor Maria Franz Hanke choose such a divisive analogy.

But then on Sunday morning he was still in Israel and the rhetoric was considerably different than the one elected by the German Bishops' Conference once they crossed over in to the Palestinian Authority on Sunday evening.
The visit of 27 members of the German Bishops' Conference to Israel included a historic first-time visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem as well as guided tours of sites holy to Christianity and meetings with Christian congregations in Israel and in the Palestinian Authority.

During their time in Israel the bishops uniformly made moderate and balanced statements, but once in the PA they provided German reporters accompanying them with a plethora of harsh proclamations against Israel. Their criticism received widespread coverage in the German media on Monday.

While crossing one of the checkpoints into East Jerusalem the Archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Joachim Meisner, told reporters: "This is something that is done to animals, not people." Meisner, a resident of eastern Germany, said that the fence reminded him of the Berlin Wall and that in his lifetime he did not believe he would see such a thing again. As the Berlin Wall was brought down so will this wall be brought down, he said, adding that the fence served no purpose.

The delegation's visit to Ramallah took place several hours after their visit to Yad Vashem and several of the bishops chose to equate the situation in the Palestinian Authority with the Holocaust.

"Cages in the image of ghettos," said the Bishop of Augsburg of the territories. Augsburg was once under the spiritual leadership of Pope Benedict XVI, who was Archbishop of the Munich-Freising Archdiocese and his brother Monsignor Georg Ratzinger still resides there.

"Israel has, of course, the right to exist, but this right cannot be realized in such a brutal manner," said Bishop Hanke, who later stated that he intends to amend this year's Easter message to German churches so as to include the delegation's political impressions from their visit to the territories and a demand to change the situation.

Iran was at the center of talks held between members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee for the US and Israel, Knesset Member Yuval Steinitz told Ynetnews on Monday evening. Steinitz is hosting a delegation of Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-California), Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) and Congressman Steve Pearce (R-New Mexico), and Arizona Senator Jon Kyl who arrived on a military flight to Israel on Sunday night to meet with fellow Israeli committee members.

On Monday evening, the delegation met with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem, and later Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The Iranian subject was the first topic in all of the discussions," Steinitz said, adding: "It was the central issue." "Everyone expressed an unequivocal stance that Iran must not be allowed to be a nuclear country, and to have nuclear weapons," Steinitz said. "There is some hope that if Europe works with the US to achieve economic sanctions, and a blockade on Tehran, then Iran may agree to halts its program, like North Korea," he said.

"If not, it's pretty clear that the military solution is on table," he added.

The US delegation toured Jerusalem throughout Monday. Knesset Member Steinitz told Ynetnews he showed the US delegation around the works being carried out at the Mugrabi Gate, as well as archaeological work around the Western Wall.

"I explained to them that the Islamic Movement's claims are not political, but are a total rejection of Judeo-Christian history. Their claim that there was no Temple in Jerusalem, and their rejection of what was said in the Old and New Testament, is an attack on Judeo-Christian tradition. It is an attempt to start a religious fanatic war," Steinitz said. [This guy's hypocrisy would make most rabbis blush]

He added that the delegation understood the severity of the issue. In the past, the joint Knesset-Congress-Senate committee helped make hundreds of millions of dollars available for Israel's missile defense shield, Arrow, which is produced in cooperation Boeing in the US.

In addition, according to Steinitz, the committee has in the past prevented arms sales to Arab states that would have threatened Israel's unique edge in the region; it also initiated the Iran nuclear sanctions law, which makes it illegal for governments to provide arms or aid Iran's nuclear program, the Knesset member said.

"This is not just a polite visit," Steinitz emphasized. On Tuesday, the delegation will visit an Arrow missile battery at an IDF base in Palmahim, in southern Israel, and will receive a guided tour on the recent successful test of the Arrow system. They will then meet with Mossad Director Meir Dagan.

(Israel Insider): A delegation of American senators is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Sunday.

The senators are members of a joint Senate-Knesset committee headed by Senator Jon Kyl, who is close to President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Member of Knesset Yuval Steinitz (Likud) is hosting the delegation.

Together with Senator Kyl, he established the committee four years ago to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries. 'We formed the committee four years ago, when I was Chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. It is the only joint committee between the American Congress and another country,' said Steinitz.

'We think that it is important that the members of the delegation feel the connection and understand Israel better. They are mostly non-Jewish and we want them to feel some obligation to the country,' he added. 'The ability of the Senate and the Congress to promote issues is just as important as that of the American administration.

They will be briefed by Mossad Officials about Iran, Hezbollah and global Jihad,' he said. 'The committee has had major achievements and we hope that this visit will lead to additional feats,' he concluded.

One of the committee's successes to date is receiving funding for a project to develop a rocket-interception system.

The two-day visit includes meetings with Opposition Chairman MK Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Chief of the Mossad. Later on they will also meet Deputy President and Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

The visit will end with dinner with Coalition Chairman MK Avigdor Itzchaky, MK Tzachi Hangebi, Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Robert Auman and Nathan Sharansky.
