Observations on Benedict XVI's Passover Eve Synagogue Visit

Witness video of Benedict's Passover eve synagogue visit in its entirety at this link:

http://wcbstv.com/topstories/Pope.Benedict.NYC.2.703533.html

What can we observe here that has not already been pointed out?

There is a tremendous amount of effort being devoted towards propping up the idea that these people who today call themselves "Jews" are actual descendants of the ancient Israelites. Maintaining this illusion is critical to the entire charade.

Likewise there's a great deal of effort made to associate Jesus with the people who today call themselves "Jews" and the anti-Biblical religion of Orthodox Judaism. Benedict stated, "I find it moving to recall that Jesus, as a young boy, heard the words of Scripture and prayed in a place such as this [NY synagogue]." This statement is false and ridiculous, but it does create an association between Jesus and the Talmudic synagogues of today, which is its most likely intended purpose.

The "brothers" theme was reinforced by the rabbi. This is a clear allusion to Jacob and Esau who were at conflict in the Old Testament. There is a Kabbalistic gnosis having to do with "Jacob" being reconciled with "Esau" prior to the Judaic "redemption." This gnosis stems from the occult tradition related to the conjunction of opposites. The Vatican's relentless drive towards "reconciliation" between Christians and Orthodox Judaic followers of the Talmud and Kabbalah is harmonious with this Kabbalistic tradition and has nothing to do with Christian, Biblical tradition. St. Paul spoke of reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles, but that it could only be through faith in Jesus Christ. This is beside the fact that we can't know who the true descendants of Abraham, Issac and Jacob are. To apply St. Paul's words regarding reconciliation to these Khazars and Sephardim who deny Christ and adhere to Talmud and Kabbalah is as diabolical as it is foolish.

The gifts that are exchanged at these meetings between the popes and Judaic leaders invariably are Judaic gifts. There is a lot to be read into this in terms of direction and proportion in their "dialogue." The synagogue gave Benedict a silver Seder plate, a Passover haggadah and matzo, and he gave them a medieval Judaic codex.

The Judaic codex which Benedict gave the synagogue as a gift was a text from the medieval rabbinic codifier, Jacob ben Asher the Ba'al ha-Turim (Master of the Pillars). Jacob ben Asher is best known for his Rimzei Ba'al ha-Turim, a work of gematria, which is to say, methods for finding "hidden teachings" in Biblical texts which, consequently, nullify the written meaning.

These poor, deluded people could benefit so much more from a copy of the New Testament than the satanic gematria of Jacob ben Asher, but why would Benedict bring the Gospel to a synagogue on the anniversary of Christ's execution? Apparently, Benedict visited these people in their synagogue on this day only to celebrate with them in their delusional ethnic conceit, praise them for their anti-Biblical traditions, and to validate those same ethnic delusions and anti-Biblical traditions in the eyes of Christians. The only preaching I heard had to do with the anti-Biblical doctrine, "Tikkun Olam" and it came from the rabbi.

Speaking of gematria, The NY Times has gone to great lengths to document that the visit was 22 minutes long. Those who understand the Kabbalistic obsession with numbers will recognize the significance here:

Pope Benedict XVI paid a 22-minute visit to the Park East Synagogue — the first papal trip to a United States synagogue — on Friday afternoon ...

The pope entered the synagogue at 5:16 p.m. ...

The pope exited the synagogue at 5:38 p.m., ending a visit of just over 20 minutes. (Pope Makes First Visit to a U.S. Synagogue," Sewell Chan, The New York Times, April 19, 2008) http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/18/a-key-moment-in-benedicts-relationship-with-the-jews/?hp

Benedict could well have become the most treacherous "vicar of Christ" in history after these past two days. Meanwhile, "traditionalists" are focused on complaining about the music at his baseball stadium Mass ...

NY Times Piece on the Passover Eve Papal Synagogue Visit

The New York Times notes:

Something seems to guide popes to New York at moments of spiritual significance for Jews. John Paul landed here in October 1995 on Yom Kippur. Benedict now comes at Passover ...

History Awaits the Pope and the Rabbi

By CLYDE HABERMAN - The New York Times

April 15, 2008

This is a busy time for Rabbi Arthur Schneier, and his schedule will only become more complicated as the week winds down. Preparations must be made for Passover, which begins Saturday night. Like any rabbi who leads a congregation, he has to write a sermon for the Sabbath. Then he needs to come up with themes for Passover services on Sunday and Monday.

Oh, one other thing: He also has to welcome a pope.

The New York journey of Pope Benedict XVI will include a historic stop of 20 minutes or so late Friday afternoon at the Park East Synagogue on East 67th Street, where Rabbi Schneier has been the spiritual leader since 1962. “Historic” is an often abused word. But in this instance it isn’t misplaced.

Never before has a pope visited a synagogue in this country. Indeed, till now, there have been only two recorded papal visits to synagogues anywhere: by John Paul II in Rome in 1986 and by Benedict in Cologne, Germany, in 2005, four months after he ascended to the papacy.

So Benedict’s conversation with Jewish religious and lay figures at Park East — think of it, with absolute respect, as the Schmooze of the Fisherman — is a certified big deal, brief though it will be.

“I look at it as a message of good will by Pope Benedict, saluting the largest Jewish community in the world outside of Israel — New York — but in a greater context, American Jewry and world Jewry,” Rabbi Schneier said. “Basically, the message is: ‘I am continuing the outreach to the Jews.’ ”

Something seems to guide popes to New York at moments of spiritual significance for Jews.

Benedict Wants the World to be Conscious of the Symbolic Significance of his Passover Eve Synagogue Visit

Benedict publicly acknowledged the fact that Christ was crucified on Passover eve in his homily of Holy Thursday, March 20, 2008 which coincided with Purim Eve:

The Pope made [the following] observation Holy Thursday in his homily during the Mass of the Lord's Supper at the Basilica of St. John Lateran ... "According to John, Jesus died on the cross precisely at the moment in which, in the temple, the Passover lambs were being sacrificed. His death and the sacrifice of the lambs coincided.

"This means that he died on the eve of Passover ... "

("Pope Notes Hypothesis on Date of Passover," Zenit, April 6, 2008)

http://www.zenit.org/article-19341?l=english

Let there be no doubt that Benedict is entirely conscious of the symbolic significance of his visit to a NY synagogue on Passover eve this Friday, April 18, 2008. Having publicly drawn attention to the fact that Christ was crucified on Passover eve only a month ago, it's as if Benedict wants the world to also be conscious of it.

Not surprisingly, we see denial-based speculation among traditionalists that the Passover eve synagogue visit may have only been a rumor or was canceled due to its absence from the official itinerary for the papal visit. These people have missed the fact that the visit is a "personal and informal visit, which is not part of [the Pope's] official program" according to Monsignor David Malloy, general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It was never on the official itinerary. Neither is his private meeting with the rabbis and Judaic power-brokers on the day before the synagogue visit, Thursday April 17th, which is the actual anniversary of the night Jesus was betrayed by Judas to the Pharisees.

On the following day Benedict will visit a synagogue of Orthodox Judaism, the religion which holds that Jesus was a sorcerer rightly executed on Passover eve for criticizing the Pharisees and leading Israel astray--on the anniversary of the day which their Talmud claims that this claimed righteous execution took place, and the day on which the Gospel records that the most terrible crime in history--the crucifixion of God-incarnate--took place.

And despite this and countless other such acts of treachery, there are still hysterical demands for further "teshuva" and "tikkun" from the modern-day spiritual heirs of the Pharisees whom Benedict calls our "elder brothers." Witness the fruits of "reconciliation" with "The Jews."

Rabbi Comments on the "Very Symbolic" Timing of Benedict's Synagogue Visit

As I said, the symbolic significance of Benedict's visit to a synagogue on the eve of Passover would not be lost on the rabbis:

The pope's trip to Park East Synagogue on April 18 will be especially meaningful because of its timing, said Rabbi Arthur Schneier, the congregation's spiritual leader.

"For him to stop in at my synagogue on the eve of Passover really is a very symbolic and significant step," Schneier said. ("Rabbis applaud pope's visit to Manhattan synagogue," Carl MacGowan, Newsday, April 3, 2008)

Benedict to Visit NY Synagogue on Passover Eve, the Day on which the Talmud Claims Jesus was Executed by the Pharisees

Adding to the terrible omen of this visit is the fact that Passover Eve falls on a Friday (Parasceve) this year, as is the day of the crucifixion in St. John's Gospel. Believe me when I tell you, the symbolism of this act of unspeakable treachery will not be missed by the Orthodox rabbis of the world, regardless of the poses they may strike for the public.

Pope to Visit New York Synagogue

RACHEL ZOLL - Associated Press

April 3, 2008

NEW YORK (AP) — During his first papal trip to the United States, Pope Benedict XVI will visit a synagogue led by ... Rabbi Arthur Schneier ...

"By this personal and informal visit, which is not part of his official program, His Holiness wishes to express his good will toward the local Jewish community as they prepare for Passover," said Monsignor David Malloy, general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Passover begins at sundown on April 19.

Separately, the pope has scheduled a meeting with Jewish leaders and representatives of other faiths for April 17 in Washington.

Park East Synagogue is a modern Orthodox congregation that was founded in 1888 and is located near the United Nations. Benedict will address the U.N. the morning of April 18.

Schneier, 78, has led the synagogue since 1962, while promoting religious freedom and tolerance worldwide. He founded the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, which promotes interfaith tolerance, and received the 2001 U.S. Presidential Citizens Medal for service to the nation.

The pope has been reaching out to Jews, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who became the first pope to set foot in a synagogue in 1986, when he visited Rome's main synagogue.

Some tensions arose recently over a Good Friday prayer Benedict revived from the old Latin rite that had historically been used as an excuse for violence and discrimination against Jews. Benedict revised the prayer to address Jewish fears, but some Jewish leaders worried that the changes did not go far enough ...

For the sake of His Passion

For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice: and the knowledge of God more than holocausts. But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant, there have they dealt treacherously against me. (Osee 6;6-7)

***
Then [the chief priests and the Pharisees] led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch. 29 Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man? 30 They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee. (John 18;28-30)

1 Then therefore, Pilate took Jesus, and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head; and they put on him a purple garment. 3 And they came to him, and said: Hail, king of the Jews; and they gave him blows. 4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him. 5 (Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: Behold the Man.

6 When the chief priests, therefore, and the servants, had seen him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Take him you, and crucify him: for I find no cause in him. 7 The Jews answered him: We have a law; and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. 8 When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more. 9 And he entered into the hall again, and he said to Jesus: Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee?

11 Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above. Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee, hath the greater sin. 12 And from henceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying: If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend. For whosoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Caesar. 13 Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew Gabbatha. 14 And it was the parasceve of the pasch, about the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews: Behold your king. 15 But they cried out: Away with him; away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar.

16 Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him forth. 17 And bearing his own cross, he went forth to that place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha. 18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst. 19 And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. (John 19;1-19)

***

On Passover Eve they hanged Jesus of Nazareth. And the herald went out before him for forty days: 'Jesus of Nazareth is going out to be stoned because he practiced sorcery, incited [to idol worship] and led Israel astray. Whoever knows an argument in his favor should come and argue on his behalf.' But they did not find an argument in his favor, and they hanged him on Passover Eve ... Jesus ... had close connections with the non-Jewish authorities, and those authorities were interested in his acquittal. Thus it was necessary to give him all the opportunity to clear himself, so that the justice of his conviction not be challenged ... Was Jesus of Nazareth deserving of a search for an argument in his favor? He was an inciter, and the Torah (lit., "the Merciful") says: "You shall not spare, nor shall you conceal him"! (Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 43a, Steinsaltz edition, Vol XVII, Part III)

***
... the Talmud is here offering a subtle commentary upon Jesus' political connections. The Gospels portray the Roman governor Pontius Pilate as going to great lengths to spare Jesus (Mark 15: 6-15). Although this passage may well have been written to appease the Roman authorities and blame the Jews, the Talmudic passage points in the same direction ...

... the passage suggests rabbinic willingness to take responsibility for the execution of Jesus. No effort is made to pin his death upon the Romans. In all likelihood, the passage in question emanates from fourth-century Babylon, then the center of Talmudic scholarship, and beyond the reach of both Rome and Christianity. Although several hundred years had elapsed since the lifetime of Jesus, and therefore this is not at all a contemporary source, the Talmudic passage indicates rabbinic willingness to acknowledge, at least in principle, that in a Jewish court and in a Jewish land, a real-life Jesus would indeed have been executed ... ("Jesus in the Talmud," Steven Bayme, American Jewish Committee National Director, September 24, 2003)
http://web.archive.org/web/20030925214732/http://www.ajc.org/inthemedia/RelatedArticles.asp?did=933

***

The very fact that the Talmud's claim of Jesus' closeness to the Roman government reflects some knowledge ... of the New Testament narrative, particularly of of John's version of it ... this detail exonerates the Roman government from the blame of Jesus' condemnation and consequently, adopting the Gospels' message, puts the thrust of the accusation on the Jews ... What we then have here in the [Babylonian Talmud] is a powerful confirmation of the New Testament Passion narrative, a creative rereading, however, that not only knows some of its distinct details but proudly proclaims Jewish responsibility of Jesus' execution. The "Cleansing" of Christians from Jerusalem Continues

From the Associated Press:

Samir Helou, an engineering lecturer from east Jerusalem, said there were markedly fewer local Christians in the Old City this year.

Take Note

Summorum Pontificum was promulgated on pagan bacchanal Live Earth Day 7/7/07, and Aphelion. The Pharisee-prompted Good Friday prayer for the Jews came on pagan bacchanal Shrove Tuesday and the prayer is expected to be prayed on pagan bacchanal Purimfest which coincides with Good Friday this year.

Out of this working has emerged a phoenix reborn--a "traditionalist" "resistance" which militantly lines up behind a Judaizing Pope:

Chaos and Transformation

The chaos caused by the recent replacement of a prayer from the ancient Catholic liturgy due to pressure from Judaic organizations has become a perfect opportunity for rebirth, reinvention and transformation. As we have seen that "The Remnant Resistance" now provides support for the characters they formerly resisted against, now, even the foaming-at-the-mouth change-agent, Walter Kasper is transformed in the other direction. Watch this protégé of Hasidic philosopher Martin Buber--whom Benedict also is a student of--as he is transformed into a tough-talking "defender of the faith":

"We think that reasonably this prayer cannot be an obstacle to dialogue because it reflects the faith of the Church and, furthermore, Jews have prayers in their liturgical texts that we Catholics don't like,"

"I must say that I don't understand why Jews cannot accept that we can make use of our freedom to formulate our prayers," Kasper, a German, told the Corriere della Sera. (Adi Schwartz, "Vatican rejects criticism of new prayer for Jewish conversion" Haaretz, 07/02/2008)

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/952188.html

This is pure stagecraft between the rabbis and Kasper. But what is really taking place here? Walter Kasper is defending the altering of an ancient Catholic prayer which expressed pure, crystal clear, orthodox theology, to a novel, mysterious prayer intended to express Benedict's Orwellian theology of the "elder brothers."

And it is interesting to see Kasper state the plain fact that Judaic prayers and texts contain offenses against Christians. Although this hardly scratches the surface of the true nature of the Judaic tradition, it is yet another public admission from a prominent Cardinal that the texts of Judaism harbor real teachings of contempt towards Christians, even as he calls these haters of Christ "elder brothers in the faith" and supports "correction" of Catholic theology and liturgy to suit them.

I will remind readers that not very long ago, the story was that it was deemed "Jew hate" to claim that the texts of Judaism contained hateful passages against Christians. When a high-profile figure like Kasper states that fact publicly, it is clear evidence that we are in a new era of revelations. The information is now getting out there. The establishment won't allow independent researchers to handle the information. They must control it themselves.

And how is the release of this information handled by Kasper? Just as it was handled by Cardinal George. The correct response should be outrage, ending of "dialogue" and a call for the rabbis to correct their hateful traditions. Kasper gives every indication that "dialogue" with the rabbis should continue, even though Catholics have nothing to gain from "religious relations" with rabbinic enemies of the faith in an arrangement where Catholic theology and tradition is "corrected" to suit rabbinic sensibilities while the rabbis keep their hateful traditions intact. If a banker threw a tantrum and threatened to tear up a 100% interest loan contract while the debtor begged him not to, that would not even begin to approach the insanity at play here.

The charade is plain and in the open for those with eyes to see.

Walter Kasper's Statement on the Good Friday Prayer for the Jews

Catholic Church Conservation blog has provided the following translation of Cardinal Walter Kasper's statement on the new Good Friday Prayer for the Jews. I'm certain that those who are familiar with Benedict's theology of the "elder brothers" will see that theology reinforced in this statement. For "Jews," conversion to Christ is not a pressing issue. That can wait until the Apocalypse. For now, we must only be concerned with "reconciliation" with the "elder brothers," always respecting their "faithfulness to the covenant" and working together "for peace and justice in the world."

For those who have a working knowledge of the actual anti-biblical Talmudic and Kabbalistic traditions of the "elder brothers," this is a spiritual and temporal death sentence for Catholics. It also is cause for deprivation of the only possible means of salvation for Jews--both real Jews and the fake Jews whom Vatican prelates demand that we have "religious relations" with, that is, "religious relations" devoid of even the thought of evangelism.

And note that, as pointed out earlier, this change is a "correction" which is to say that there was error ("antisemitism") in one of the most ancient prayers of the Catholic liturgy. Those who accuse the Catholic Church of harboring "teachings of contempt" have scored a huge victory here.

"The Holy Father, the Holy See, is aware that the history between Jews and Christians is a difficult and complicated history. We must take this into account, there are many sensitivities. Therefore, the prayer for the Good Friday has been corrected in the so-called old liturgy which is now the "extraordinary" liturgy. The blindness of the Jews was cited. This was perceived as insulting and the sentence has been deleted.

But on the other hand, the Pope did not remove what is specific to our faith, namely the belief in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God, the Saviour of all people, which includes according to our belief also the Jews. The Pope wanted to express this Faith. This is not an obstacle for dialogue, because the dialogue presupposes that the identity of the Jewish faith and identity of the Christian faith can be mutually recognised and naturally, this leads to dialogue.

We have much in common with Jewish people, but this is a difference which you cannot ignore.

When the Pope presently speaks on the conversion of Jews, then you have to understand correctly. He cited literally the Eleventh Chapter of the letter of the Apostle Paul to the Romans. The apostle, says that we, as Christians, hope, when the fullness of pagans enters the church, then that Israel will completely convert. This is an eschatological hope for the end of the ages, which does not mean that we have the intention now to be missionaries to Jews as one sends missions to the heathens.

We have in the meantime now shoulder to shoulder to recognise our mutual diversity.
We Christians must of course give testimony of our faith in Jesus the Christ. This is also a freedom of religion, which we have to be given to say and confess what we believe, as the Jews themselves have the opportunity to express their Faith. One could also say that in the place of the old language of contempt is now respect and mutual recognition in our diversity. With this difference, in faith in Jesus Christ, we must live and we must recognize, which does not exclude in any way that there are the many things on which we agree, the possibility of working together for peace and justice in the world."

The New Latin Good Friday Prayer

A few thoughts:

This mockery came on Shrove Tuesday. Nice gag.

I hope that in all of the confusion that will result from this development that people don't loose sight of the fact that the so-called "Jews" who have wailed for this change are only Jews in as far as Apocalypse 2;9 and 3;9 state.

Obviously, this change has come in response to very public lobbying from the ADL, AJC, the Chief Rabbinate of "Israel," papal rabbi-knight David Rosen and many others who have been shrieking for the prayer to be dropped or rewritten since the time that Summorum Pontificum was only rumored of. This has been thoroughly documented here. What happened stealthily in 1955 is now plain and in the open. The Vatican takes requests from Christ's enemies in theological and liturgical matters.

As it was anticipated, the prayer didn't do away with the idea of conversion. However, this should not be taken to indicate that Vatican prelates now seek conversion of "the Jews." If that was the case they would change the Good Friday prayer in their ordinary rite (Novus Ordo). But there is no indication that the Novus Ordo Good Friday prayer, with its Orwellian praises for the "the faithfulness to the covenant" of "the Jewish people" will be changed. The net effect here is that the Latin liturgy is gradually "updated" at a pace suitable to "trads." Most will be aware that this is the second change to the Latin Good Friday prayer for the Jews in 50 years. More changes in the same direction will come if "trads" are gauged to be ripe for them.

The change is very clever because it swaps "offensive" biblical language for other apparently more positive biblical language, rather than dropping the "offensive" words from the 1962 prayer. This is most certainly intended to project an image of conservatism. It's from the Bible, after all. Who can argue against that?

The problem with the new prayer, despite its hearkening to Romans 11;25-26, is that it takes the present-time intention of the original prayer and thrusts it into the realm of mystery and prophesy dealing with the future. The intention and meaning of the original prayer was perfectly clear: Christians pray for the conversion of the Jews here and now. Romans 11;25-26 deals with a mystery prophesied to take place in the future at the last days. The message seems to be that we should pray for the end-times to come quickly so the "Jews" will convert, and that they don't need Christ in the meantime. This is not, nor has it ever been the position of the Church. The Church always sought the conversion of Jews--real and fake "Jews" alike--not just at the second coming, but from the Pentecost until the time of the Second Vatican Council--at all times. St. Vincent Ferrer and all of the evangelists knew nothing of the new theology of the "elder brothers." Apparently, he was wrong?

The mysterious nature of Romans 11;25-26 is exploited as a playground by Judaizers such as "Hebrew Catholics" like Roy Schoeman, who use it as "support" for their crazy theses which have it that prophesy is being fulfilled by Talmudic/Kabbalistic/Zionist Khazars dragging their baggage into the Church. Judging from my study of the new theology of the "elder brothers" emanating from Rome, that is the thinking that this new prayer intends to promote--in the traditionalist fold.

The end-times nature of this new prayer calls to mind the Vatican document The Jewish People and their Sacred Scripture in the Christian Bible prefaced and signed by Benedict/Ratzinger as Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, in which it is stated:

"Jewish messianic expectation is not in vain. It can become for us Christians a powerful stimulant to keep alive the eschatological dimension of our faith. Like them, we too live in expectation. The difference is that for us the One who is to come will have the traits of the Jesus who has already come and is already present and active among us."

http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/pcb_documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20020212_popolo-ebraico_en.html

No, Herr Ratzinger, I'm afraid that the "one who is to come" whom Jesus Christ said will come in his own name and who "the Jews" will accept as their "messiah" will not be Jesus Christ, nor will he have the traits of Jesus Christ.

Benedict's Kosher Via Crucis

Pope makes Nazi atrocities part of Stations of the Cross

Pope speaks of Nazi atrocities in Easter ritual
By Malcolm Moore in Rome
April 7, 2007 Daily Telegraph (UK)

The Pope shocked many Catholics last night with a dramatically revised version of the Stations of the Cross, one of the central rituals of the Easter ceremony. The ceremony, also known as the Via Crucis, recreates Jesus's path on the day of his death from the Antonia fortress to Golgotha, where he was crucified.

The Pope carried the cross for the first and last of the 14 stops on a candle-lit procession around the Coliseum in Rome. However, this year the Pope chose to change both the route and the content of the ceremony. The Vatican said the changes were designed to reflect the gospels more truly and to link Jesus's suffering with the suffering of mankind today.

One of the boldest changes came on the third stop, where Jesus is given up to Pontius Pilate by the Sanhedrin, a council of Jews. The Pope recalled the sentence that was passed over the Jews by the Nazis, and their suffering in concentration camps. He quoted Etty Hilesum, a Dutch Jew, who was executed in Auschwitz in 1943, saying: "We must oppose every new horror and crime with a new piece of the truth and goodness. We may suffer, but we must not succumb."

Monsignor Gianfranco Ravasi, the prefect of the Ambrosian Library in Milan and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, was asked by the Pope to update the ceremony. He said: "I did not want the ceremony just to be a simple recollection of a past event. I wanted worshippers to feel and live through the raw and bitter reality like a neighbour."

The new changes also included cutting the stop where Jesus drops the Cross, as well as a reference to St Veronica, who mopped Jesus's brow. St Veronica is merely apocryphal and not mentioned in the gospels.

However, a reference to Judas Iscariot was inserted for the first time because, in the words of Mgr Ravasi, "dawn follows night, out of darkness comes light, and after betrayal comes penitence." Later, on the ninth stop, where Jesus met a group of women, the Pope spoke out against the suffering of "violated" women. He recalled the women "who have been subjected to tribal practices", the mothers in crisis and alone, "the Jewish or Palestinian mothers and those in all lands ravaged by war, the widows and old ladies forgotten by their children".The ceremony ended with St Matthew's Passion by Bach.
