Dr. Victor Goldbloom is an executive chairman of the Canadian Jewish Congress which was exposed for having propped up phony 'Nazis' in Canada in the 1960's which Victor Goldbloom and his cronies then used to intimidate the Canadian government and justify hate legislation.

Dr. Goldbloom is a pediatrician and politician who worked as a Liberal party Member of the National Assembly of Quebec at the time that Canada's Liberal party introduced legalized abortion into North America. His wife, Sheila Goldbloom is also a strong advocate of abortion on demand.

When Canadian politician Camil Samson, outraged by the acquittal of bolshevik abortionist Dr. Henry Morgantaler, aptly noted the irony that Canadians had gone to war to save 'Jews' and that Judaic doctors thanked them by terminating the lives of Canadian babies, Dr. Goldbloom led the political lynch mob against him.

Dr. Goldbloom  is also a veteran Judaizer of Christians under the euphemism of 'dialogue.'

MONTREAL — Dr. Victor Goldbloom is being recognized by the Vatican for his lifelong leadership in promoting Catholic-Jewish relations.

Goldbloom, a pioneer in interfaith dialogue locally, nationally and internationally, will receive the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Sylvester Pope and Martyr, to be bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI.

Established in 1905, it’s one of five Orders of Knighthood awarded directly by the pope as head of the Catholic Church and as head of the State of Vatican City.

Goldbloom is among a minority of non-Catholics and small number of Jews worldwide to be so honoured, and he joins the ranks of such noteworthy and diverse members as German industrialist Oskar Schindler, credited with saving more than 1,000 Jews during the Holocaust; entertainer Bob Hope; Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, and Archduke Otto von Habsburg, crown prince of Austria and Hungary.

Goldbloom, 88, was recommended by the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism, an independent Montreal-based organization encouraging inter-church and interfaith dialogue.

“This is an extremely rare honour, normally reserved for ambassadors,” said the centre’s executive director, Anthony Mansour.

“As far as I know, Dr. Goldbloom is the first Jewish Canadian to receive the honour, and among a handful of Canadians of any faith. He is the first non-Christian in the history of the Archdiocese of Montreal and Quebec to have the papal honour conferred upon him.”

The recommendation was approved by the new Catholic Archbishop of Montreal Christian Lépine and officially announced at a reception held at his residence May 10. Also present were Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte and Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Dowd.

Announced concurrently was the awarding to Father Irénée Beaubien, 96, the centre’s founder in 1963, of the Pontifical Medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.

Father Beaubien and Goldbloom, a board member of the centre, are pioneers in combating misunderstanding between Catholics, especially francophones, and Jews in Quebec. They will formally be decorated Sept. 4 at a gala dinner at Federation CJA’s Gelber Conference Centre, which will benefit the centre.

The choice of award, Bishop Dowd noted, was recommended by the Vatican.
“It is appropriate, because what is an ambassador? It is someone who knows where he is from and is faithful to it, but is open to dialogue with another community.”

Goldbloom said his interfaith work began more than 50 years ago, when he was “an ordinary practising pediatrician with no experience in inter-religious relations” and came into contact with the Jesuit fathers who were then the faculty of what was Loyola College.

“It challenged me to know my own religion better and to talk about it with those who did not know it,” he recalled.

Early on, Goldbloom advocated that the Jewish community must dialogue with the majority in Quebec, and must be able to do so in French. Among the many friendships he made, one Goldbloom cherishes is with Cardinal Turcotte, who retired as archbishop in March.

Goldbloom remembered the archbishop’s participation in a Yom Kippur service at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom some years ago.

Turcotte sat between Goldbloom and Rabbi Leigh Lerner. As is customary, they placed a tallit over the shoulders of their guest as an amicable gesture.

“That was one of the most moving moments of my life,” Goldbloom said.

Venerable David Oliver, the Anglican chair of the centre’s board, noted the historical significance of a Christian and a Jew being honoured at the same Sept. 4 event. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, which radically transformed the Catholic Church’s relationship with other faiths.

“Leading up to the Council, it was men like Father Beaubien and Dr. Goldbloom, often working against opposition from within their own religious communities, who paved the way,” Oliver said.

“They are two Quebecers, two Canadians, two men of faith who helped shape the open and tolerant society we enjoy today. Every generation that follows owes them a debt of gratitude for their courage, perseverance and unwavering commitment to dialogue as the path to peace and reconciliation.”

Last year we noted that the Israeli tribalist Fr. David Jaeger was installed as a prelate auditor of the Roman Rota, the highest court of the Catholic Church. We noted Jaeger's candid admission that at the Vatican court he would be as loyal to the people of Counterfeit Israel and the nation of Counterfeit Israel as any other Israeli working for a supranational body, mentioning the interesting example of Israelis working at the International Monetary Fund as a reference as to how his tribal loyalty would manifest itself as he works at the Vatican's highest court. We appreciate the candor because it reveals the farce of the court historian portrayal of the court 'Jew' as a turncoat and lays bare the previously well hidden reality.

Jaeger was a key figure in the Vatican's official recognition of Counterfeit Israel of 1993, a typically raw deal where the gangster state was afforded undeserved credibility by the venerable 2000 year-old Church institution and Catholics got nothing except spat upon. This can only last so long, however. Whatever residual credibility the Vatican may be coasting on presently that was not lost in the pedophilia scandal is being squandered entirely in the massive Zionist vortex of consumption.

Jaeger's suggestion that without Vatican II and Nostra Aetate 'The Jews' are in danger of annihilation by violent mobs of 'non-Jews' fueled by Christian theological hatred of 'Jews' is itself a form of hatred of the historical Church and the Christian people; a blood libel--always the double standard. And Jaeger's appeals to victimhood as he sits at the head of the Vatican's highest court inciting an inquisition against Catholics pushes chutzpah far beyond most previous wild examples.

Jeager's work, like that of the misnamed 'Opus Dei,' is the relativisation away of the the Church's past authoritative teachings and making an absolute out of a  document lobbied for by haters of the Church and the Gospel--Jules Isaac, B'nai B'rith, AJC, WJC, etc., etc,--and co-written by a rabbi who admitted that he wanted to attack Christians' souls.

Church should not accept members who deny Vatican II, official says

ROME (CNS) -- The Second Vatican Council's teaching, particularly on Judaism and other religions, is rooted in traditional Christian theology and the Bible, and the Catholic Church should not offer concessions to those who do not accept its teaching, said an Israeli-born Franciscan who serves as a judge on a top Vatican court.

Msgr. David Jaeger, a judge at the Roman Rota, defined as worrying a tendency, "here and there in Catholicism, to look leniently upon stray groups that are marginal but well-publicized who denounce the doctrine of the council, including the declaration 'Nostra Aetate'" on the relationship of the church to non-Christian religions.

Msgr. Jaeger, who grew up in a Jewish family, spoke about "Nostra Aetate" during a conference on the Second Vatican Council at Rome's Opus Dei-run Holy Cross University May 3-4.

"While often presented as if it were absolutely new," he said, the teaching of "Nostra Aetate" "perfectly corresponds to the most ancient intuitions of Christian theology" when it affirms "there can be, and in particular cases, are elements of truth and holiness" in other religions, he said. In addition, the document emphasized that Judaism [the religion which teaches Jesus got what he deserved at Calvary] has a special status, which "already was extensively explained by St. Paul, particularly in the Epistle to the Romans" [a ridiculous falsehood. St. Paul addresses a remnant of Israelites, not the Pharisaic religion of Judaism that revels in responsibility for Jesus' execution].

The council's document explained the church's "doctrine on Judaism, the only religion which, while not knowing Christ, has its origins in biblical revelation, which is why the church does not regard it simply as a 'non-Christian religion,' but ascribes to it a unique status," Msgr. Jaeger said [falsely. Judaism has its origins in the Pharisees and the Mishnah and their making the Bible of no effect].

While recognizing the unique and special relationship between God and the Jewish people, he said, the council did not say say that Judaism was a "parallel path to salvation" and it did not deny that somehow, in the end, all salvation would be accomplished through Christ.

Obviously motivated by the horrors of the Holocaust, but also by centuries of injustices and persecution of Jews "by those who called themselves Christians and believed they therefore could justify their brutality, the declaration took care to severely condemn such conduct and to highlight the complete illegitimacy of supporting it with any reference to Christianity," he said.

"The proof of Nostra Aetate's effectiveness is that it seems strange to have to say it today," the monsignor said.

However, he said, "One must take this occasion to express the deep hope that leniency will be denied" to anyone who does not accept the council's teaching and "that there will be no being content with fake, quasi-adhesions accompanied by evident verbal and mental reservations to the teaching of the Second Vatican Council in general and to 'Nostra Aetate' in particular."

"In fact," he said, "the extreme gravity of the counter-witness of those who have, for centuries, abused the name of Christ and the term Christian to persecute and oppress the Jews must never be forgotten or underestimated in any way."

A delegation from Israel comprised of rabbis, sheikhs and a priest resolved in Istanbul on Thursday to form an interfaith convention – along with their Turkish hosts – that will arbitrate disputes in the Middle East and Muslim world to counter religious extremism and promote peace.

The Israeli group arrived in Istanbul on Wednesday at the beckoning of Adnan Oktar, known also as Harun Yahya, a philosopher and theologian with a large following in the Muslim world. The delegation was led by Deputy Minister for Development of the Negev and Galilee, [Likud fanatic] Ayoob Kara.

Also taking part in it were Holon’s Chief Rabbi Avraham Yosef, who is the son of Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, and part of the Chief Rabbinical Council; Rabbi Avraham Sherman of the Supreme Rabbinic Court; Chief Rabbi of Ohr Yehuda and Sha’ar Hanegev, Zion Cohen; Secretary of the Shas party, Rabbi Zvi Jacobson; the Vatican’s representative to the Middle East, Fr. “Through joint efforts, we must find the formula to cancel the legitimacy of people who use religion for religious extremism and bring disasters upon the world,” Kara said after the joint press conference wrapped up a round of meetings.

“When a supreme body that will force all to act according to the Creator’s will shall be formed, the level of religious extremism will drop since God commanded us to not murder and use his name in vain. These imperatives have become vague after certain people used God’s name in vain to break the most important commandment of not murdering, and turned the world into a killing field in the name of God,” he added.

It is Oktar who will be organizing the meeting in Turkey this year, which will host 1,200 religious leaders. A second meeting of the forum will be aimed at taking place in Jerusalem, where a peace accord will be announced along the lines of Oktar’s vision of the Turkish Islamic Union he is promoting – based in Turkey and including dozens of countries from the area, including Israel and other non-Muslim states, which will enjoy the protection of Turkey ... Berlusconi joke about Jews draws criticism from Vatican newspaper

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The Vatican newspaper criticized Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi for telling a "deplorable" joke about the Jews and the Holocaust.

Berlusconi, chatting with supporters outside his home, told a joke about a Jew who charged a fellow Jew 3,000 euros a day to hide him in his basement during World War II.

Berlusconi's punch line was: "The Jew says, the question now is whether we should tell him Hitler is dead and the war is over." The joke was videotaped and posted Oct. 2 on the website of the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica.

The Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said the story "offends both the sentiments of believers and the sacred memory of the 6 million victims of the Holocaust."

It said the prime minister's words were a "sad" example of the uncivil language being used increasingly in politics and public life, a trend recently condemned by the Italian bishops' conference.

The newspaper of the Italian bishops' conference, Avvenire, said Berlusconi's joke was "offensive and inexplicable."

Berlusconi's office issued a statement saying the joke was told in private, and that the responsibility for bad taste belonged to those who publicized it.

Gerald Fitzgerald, in his capacity as founder of the Servants of the Paraclete, an order for rehabilitation of alcoholic and pedophile priests, warns numerous bishops and Pope Paul VI of his findings that pedophile priests were not capable of rehabilitation; that if they were returned to parishes they would almost certainly continue sexually abusing children, and his recommendation that they should be laicized and ostracized.

The claim "we didn't know" is a lie. They've known since at least the early 1950's.

Cardinal hailed bishop for hiding predator priest: report

(Reuters) - A Vatican cardinal in charge of clergy around the world congratulated a French bishop in a 2001 letter for not denouncing a sexually abusive priest to the police, according to a French website on Thursday.

The letter posted by Golias, a critical lay Roman Catholic magazine based in Lyon, is the most explicit of a wave of recently published internal church documents in showing past Vatican encouragement to cover up sexual abuse by priests.

In the letter dated Sept 8, 2001, Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos backed French Bishop Pierre Pican's decision not to denounce a priest who was later sentenced to 18 years in jail for repeated rape of a boy and sexual assaults on 10 others.

Under fire in recent weeks for its secretive handling of abuse cases, the Vatican has insisted the fact that other published documents did not explicitly instruct bishops to inform police of abuse did not prove it told them to hide it.

Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi did not dispute the letter's content but said it confirmed "how opportune it was to centralize treatment of cases of sexual abuse of minors by clerics under the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith."

The then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, instructed Catholic bishops around the world on May 18, 2001 to report all case of clerical sexual abuse of minors to the Congregation, the top Vatican doctrinal office that he headed.

Pican, who received a suspended three-month jail sentence for not denouncing sexual abuse of minors, admitted in court he had kept Rev. Rene Bissey in parish work despite the fact the priest had privately admitted committing pedophile acts.

The case shocked France and prompted its bishops to declare that all abuse cases must be reported to civil authorities.

"I congratulate you for not denouncing a priest to the civil administration," Castrillon Hoyos said. "You have acted well and I am pleased to have a colleague in the episcopate who, in the eyes of history and of all other bishops in the world, preferred prison to denouncing his son and priest."

BISHOPS NOT REQUIRED TO INFORM POLICE

In it, the cardinal said relations between bishops and priests were not simply professional but had "very special links of spiritual paternity." Bishops therefore had no obligation to testify against "a direct relative," he stated.

The letter cited Vatican documents and an epistle of Saint Paul to bolster its argument about special bishop-priest links.

"To encourage brothers in the episcopate in this delicate domain, this Congregation will send copies of this letter to all bishops' conferences," Castrillon Hoyos wrote.

A staunch conservative from Colombia, the cardinal headed the Vatican department for priests from 1996 to 2006. From 2000 to 2009, he also ran a commission dealing with traditionalist rebels who broke from Rome in 1988 and were excommunicated.

He conducted the talks that led to the January 2009 decision to readmit the four banned bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X to the Church, which caused an uproar when it emerged that one of them, Richard Williamson, had denied the Holocaust.

The controversy was highly embarrassing to Pope Benedict, who said he did not know about Williamson's views, even though they could easily be found on the internet.

Two months after the incident, Benedict folded Castrillon Hoyos's commission into the Congregation and the cardinal retired.

On Thursday the pope said the church had to do penance for its sins, in a rare public reference to the pedophilia scandal.

I propose that "Church militant" "traditionalists" who heed the call to "defend the 'holy father'" against "his attackers" ask themselves a simple question: if "the holy father" is able to change ancient Catholic tradition and teaching to suit "the brothers in the faith" in a matter of weeks and months, then why, even after decades pass, is it not possible to protect the souls of Catholic children from sex predators in "the holy father's" employ?

Vienna - The Vatican is set to tell a rebel ultra- traditional Catholic group that the Church's core values and its relations with Judaism are not negotiable, Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn said in an interview published on Saturday. Earlier this year, the Catholic leadership in Rome drew criticism from within and outside the Church for lifting excommunication orders against bishops of the controversial Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), including British-born Richard Williamson who has denied the scale of the Nazi mass murder of Jews.

In the coming days, a recently restructured church commission would meet the renegades, the cardinal and Vienna archbishop told the Passauer Neue Presse.

Rome would not give the group a "free pass," and Pope Benedict XVI was striving to "get a group of Catholics which has parted from the Church back into the boat," said Schoenborn, who is a member of several Vatican bodies.

The non-negotiable positions to be set out to the Pius Society include the Church's positions towards the Jewish faith, other non- Christian religions as well as Christian faiths, and towards religious freedom as a fundamental human right, according to Schoenborn.

In June, the pope placed the commission under the authority of the Holy See's main disciplinary watchdog body, after it had drawn criticism for its handling of the SSPX.

SSPX members are currently barred from official roles within the church unless they agree to fully abide with its teachings.

Such teachings include the so-called Second Vatican Council reforms of the 1960s, which sought to modernize the Church.

Catholic-Jewish relations discussed in Boston

(NECN: Alison King) - Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Gabriela Shalev was at Boston College Law School to speak to students about Israel and Middle East peace issues.

Shalev was a guest professor at the Catholic university, in the early eighties and her return, orchestrated by the anti-defamation league was a show of the strong Jewish-Catholic relationship that exists in Boston.

It’s a relationship that has been tested in recent months, following the decision in January by Pope Benedict to lift the excommunication of a holocaust-denying bishop: Richard Williamson.

Many Boston-area Jews have expressed outrage at the Catholic Church

But not ambassador Shalev.

Gabriela: We feel very strongly about denial of holocaust, but we have so many other conflicts that we are dealing with that I think this should be left behind.

The ambassador was joined by Boston Archbishop Cardinal Sean O’Malley, who was also invited to the event.

Cardinal Sean: I think everyone was shocked and disappointed that it took place, but no one who knows the holy father doubts his commitment to the good relations between Catholics and Jews.

Cardinal O’Malley says the commission that was advising the pope on this matter has been dissolved and turned over to a larger group of cardinals and bishops.

And he says, the pope's visit to Israel in May will go a long way to show the churches commitment to the Jewish people.

Cardinal Sean: I consider this a hiccup along the road. The relationships are there and they are important to us and I think that's why people reacted so strongly to this because the relationship is so strong.

Gabriela Shalev: We look very much forward to the visit of the Pope to Israel and you know there are many people who would like to welcome him. And we cherish and appreciate very much the good relations we have with our Catholic and Jewish friends?

The Chief Rabbinate has decided to resume dialogue with the Holy See, after the Vatican declared that an apology from Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson wasn't good enough and that he must repudiate his views if he wants to be a Roman Catholic clergyman.

Israel Radio reported Sunday that the Vatican confirmed that a Chief Rabbinate delegation headed by Haifa's Chief Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Hacohen would visit in some two weeks and meet Pope Benedict VI [sic].

In the meeting, preparations are expected to be made for the Pope's visit to Israel in May.

Papal trip to Holy Land takes shape

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI's planned trip to the Holy Land was slowly taking shape in February, and the tentative schedule included a number of important pastoral and interreligious events.

The proposed itinerary would take the pope to Jordan May 8-11 ...

The pope would travel from Jordan to Israel May 11 and visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem the same day. Over the next three and a half days, he would visit the Western Wall, sacred to Jews; meet with Jewish and Muslim leaders; hold talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders; visit a Palestinian refugee camp; and celebrate Mass in Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jerusalem.

Before returning to Rome May 15, the tentative schedule calls for the pope to hold a brief ecumenical encounter and visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. There was talk of a papal stop in war-devastated Gaza, but Vatican sources said there were no firm plans for such an event; instead, a delegation of Gaza residents was expected to attend one of the papal Masses.

The Vatican's chief papal trip planner was expected to meet with local organizers in late February to work out a definitive schedule for the visit.

AJC Welcomes Vatican Statement on Holocaust Denier Bishop

New York – February 4, 2009 – AJC has applauded today’s statement from the Vatican demanding that Bishop Richard Williamson “absolutely, unequivocally and publicly distance himself” from his advocacy of Holocaust denial.

Williamson, a conservative Bishop whose excommunication by the late Pope John Paul II was recently revoked by Pope Benedict XVI, has consistently denied the existence of the Nazi gas chambers. The Vatican’s statement demanding he recant these view follows a chorus of angry protest from both Jewish groups and non-Jewish groups.

"This is what we were asking for - an unequivocal repudiation of Williamson's odious opinions and all such forms of anti-Semitism," said Rabbi David Rosen, AJC's International Director of Interreligious Affairs. “This welcome statement, as well as the clear reiteration that the Society of Saint Pius X, to which Williamson belongs, will only be allowed back into the Church once it respects the historic reforms of the Second Vatican Council, demonstrates the Vatican’s continuing commitment to good relations with the Jewish community. Had all this been expressed at the outset, we could have avoided the unnecessary damage and distress.”

Rosen paid special tribute to the many religious and civic leaders who contributed to this satisfactory resolution, in particular German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Chancellor Merkel urged the Vatican to go further in its clear rejection of Holocaust denial and deniers. “We deeply appreciate Chancellor Merkel’s principled stance,” Rosen said. “Holocaust denial must never be tolerated or legitimized.”

Coincidentally, Rabbi/Pharisee David Rosen was one of the signers of the joint Delegation of the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews /Chief Rabbinate of Israel document which falsely claims that the Talmudic "Noahide laws" have a biblical foundation.

I believe it's fair to ask whether this AJC rabbi emissary to the Vatican, David Rosen, has the same motivations as his predecessor, Rabbi Abraham Heschel. I have no doubt, but Rosen is far more slick than Heschel.

Another rabbi-Inquisitor of Holocaustolatry, Leon Klenicki was knighted by Benedict XVI in 2007. Rabbi Leon Klenicki, in addition to being an "Anti-Defamation" League operative, was a strong advocate of Rabbi Benamozegh's teachings on "Noahide" Churchianity.

Dear Reader, here are two Judaic power organization operatives, zealous rabbi/inquisitors against "Holocaust" denial, deceitful evangelists of the "Noahide laws," who also happen to have been knighted by Benedict XVI.

I ask people to consider whether "full communion" with Benedict XVI and his elder brother peddlers of the "Noahide" faith is something to be sought after by true followers of Jesus Christ and His Gospel teachings.

Benedict to Bless Counterfeit Israel in May

The politicians and rabbis of counterfeit Israel have issued repeated invitations to Benedict XVI for a visit to that evil state since his election in 2005. Benedict and his spokesmen repeatedly replied that the conditions in "Israel" weren't right for a papal visit. The gullible may have taken this to mean that the pope opposed the humanitarian disaster taking place in the occupied territories, but now we know for certain that this wasn't even a consideration for the pope. He was merely holding out due to Israeli financial chicanery related to Vatican properties which he apparently has been led to believe will soon be settled after 14 years.

Note that days after the Vatican confirmed that it was planning for a papal visit to counterfeit Israel that the Israelis began showering the people of Gaza with U.S.-supplied bombs from their U.S.-supplied F-16's. And yes, these are the same people of Gaza whom the Israelis had prepared for these atrocities by confining them to a ghetto and depriving them of all basic life necessities for many months beforehand, cruelty which the Vatican has been quite mute about as far as I am aware. Benedict, in a grotesque mockery of papal diplomacy, has responded to these Israeli bombings with fake neutrality, equally condemning "violence" on both sides as if there were some parity between Gaza and "Israel" in these events and the conditions that preceded them. Benedict's response in essence would be somewhat similar to telling the Warsaw ghetto-confined "Jews" and the Nazis to stop fighting with each other (imagine the Judaic shrieking if that had happened!), and this from a man who is so often praised for his keen intellect. What a boost Benedict has given the Israelis who desire so much to exterminate the Palestinian people from Palestinian land and to accomplish this with the world thinking well of them for it.

There will be a Benedict XVI papal visit to that pit of evil which he calls the "Holy Land" and it seems that, now that their real estate issues may be close to a settlement, no war crimes or humanitarian disaster could stop it.

Pope trip to Holy Land still possible despite Gaza

VATICAN CITY, Dec 28 (Reuters) - A possible trip by Pope Benedict to the Holy Land should not be written off because of the escalating conflict in the Gaza Strip, the Vatican's chief spokesman told Reuters on Sunday.

A papal trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories, expected in the spring, would be significant for political and religious relations in the Middle East. It would also be the pope's first trip to the Holy Land since his election in 2005.

Rev. Federico Lombardi said that speculation in the Italian media that the Vatican was rethinking the trip because of the violence was "premature", even as the death toll neared 290 from the two-day Israeli offensive in Gaza.

"It's clear that (the Vatican) is following the situation, but it seems premature to say this incident is a determining or definitive factor," Lombardi said.

He added that the idea of a papal trip to the region had always been addressed "with a certain understanding that the situation is still a risky situation".

"The pope wants to make this trip. There have been contacts to prepare a draft programme and now we must wait to learn if there is a decision" to go ahead with it, he said, adding the final decision was up to the pontiff himself.

Benedict has repeatedly called for an end to the fighting in recent days, including during a high-profile appeal at Christmas. On Sunday, he pressed for all sides to abandon the "perverse logic of conflict and violence".

"The native land of Jesus cannot continue to be witness to so much bloodshed, repeating itself without end. I implore an end to that violence ... and for a renewal of the truce in the Gaza Strip," he told crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square.

The Vatican supports Israel's right to exist within secure borders alongside an independent Palestinian state and hopes a papal trip can help political and religious dialogue aimed at Middle East peace.

Two of Benedict's predecessors in modern times, John Paul II and Paul VI, also visited the Holy Land.

A trip by the pope to Israel could also help improve Catholic-Jewish relations, strained recently over wartime Pope Pius XII, accused by some Jews of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust.

The Vatican says that while Pius did not speak out against the Holocaust, he worked behind the scenes to help Jews because direct intervention would have worsened the situation by prompting retaliation from Hitler. (Editing by Philippa Fletcher)

Israel, Vatican eager to finalize talks before papal visit

JERUSALEM (CNS) -- Israeli and Vatican negotiators appear eager to finalize negotiations on fiscal and property matters prior to the pope's visit to the Holy Land, a source close to the negotiations said.

"Both the state of Israel and the representatives of the Holy See are very interested to finalize this," he said, adding that though he was unaware of any official policy, the pope's visit, reportedly in May, might be acting as an impetus for both sides to finish up negotiations.

In a statement following a plenary session at the Vatican Dec. 18, the negotiators said they have scheduled another plenary session for April 23 and four meetings of their working group which will take place starting in January with "the intent on both sides of accelerating the process and reaching an agreement as soon as possible."

The statement called the December meeting "significant and useful."

"Everybody is tired," said the source, who wished to remain anonymous. "The visit by the pope may be the time to finalize it."

AMMAN - The Israeli authorities on Sunday barred Papal Nuncio Archbishop Antonio Franco from leading a mass with the local Christians at a church in Gaza, sources said.

The archbishop, who is also the apostolic delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine, has been in Palestine for almost three years.

The incident is the first of its kind. “The trip is not of a diplomatic kind,” Father Humam Khzouz, a Jordanian priest based in Palestine, who was accompanying the archbishop on his trip, said over the phone from Jerusalem on Monday.

“It was largely a spiritual mission to celebrate a mass with the locals who were looking forward to spending holy time with the archbishop,” he told The Jordan Times. At the moment, the parish in Gaza is vacant since its priest Monsignor Manuel Mussallam was allowed to visit his family in Birzeit after spending eight years in Gaza.

It was also the first time the 300 worshippers at the “Holy Family” church were left without a Sunday mass.

“This is a disrespect to all diplomatic ties between Israel and the Vatican, as well as a violation against the rights of the Christians in Gaza, who have the right to hold their rituals freely,” Amman-based Roman Catholic priest Rifat Bader told The Jordan Times.

Father Khzouz said: “I, along with the three priests, have service passports which allow us to travel without previous arrangements with the Israeli authority.”

On the other hand, he added, the archbishop has an official diplomatic passport accredited from the Israeli foreign ministry.

Nevertheless, contacts were held with Israeli officials from the foreign ministry three days prior to the papal nuncio’s visit to Gaza.

“The Israeli authorities knew of our visit since Tuesday,” Father Khzouz said. “Still,” he added, “they [the Israeli authorities] left us waiting at the Erez crossing for almost three hours,” while the Israelis allowed other delegations “to enter and leave Gaza on the same day”.

“We were standing there [at the Erez Crossing] barred from entering Gaza while the UN, Red Cross and other officials were permitted in and out of the strip,” Father Khzouz said.

“It could be sensed that this behaviour on the part of Israel is meant as a negative message to the Vatican,” Father Bader said.
