Rabbi Jerome Epstein is a representative of the chameleon-like "Conservative Judaism" branch of rabbinism. And here we see Rabbi Epstein striking an enlightened, tolerant pose as damage control for the recent burning of hundreds of New Testaments by Israeli "Jews" who were not only acting as Shas activists as Rabbi Epstein disingenuously suggests, but were piously adhering to the teachings of Talmud and Tosefta which order that the books of Christian "idolators" be burned, specifically Babylonian Talmud Gittin 45b and Tosefta Shabbat 13:5.

Rabbi Jerome Epstein goes on to draw a parallel between the behavior of these Orthodox Judaic Israelis and that of the Nazis and Catholic inquisitors as a distraction from the fact that the Israeli book-burners were acting in accordance with their very own rabbinic tradition dating back to 300 A.D. which Rabbi Epstein himself is a "conservative" representative of.

This sophistry will not do. If Rabbi Epstein wants to be considered a true humanist rather than a lying rabbi then he will need to acknowledge the true source of the violence against the Gospel (the "Gilyonim" to him) which drove those Israelis to burn the New Testament--his own religion: rabbinic Judaism--and start the long overdue reform process of that tribal racket masquerading as "one of the world's great religions."

It's time that the world learned that book burnings were not limited to the most loathsome creatures in history according to kosher received opinion--Nazis and Catholics, who are virtually of the same mold according to received opinion--but that the rabbis and their followers have been burning other people's books for 1700 years in accordance with the ruling of Orthodox Judaism, shrieking victimhood all the while.

And also note that this is not an isolated incident as Rabbi Epstein falsely claims. It is only unusual in that it received the attention that it did, which was very little, but more than usual. That's the only reason that the rabbi is "speaking out" here:

... I am deeply proud of Israel.

But my feelings of pride are dampened by the distasteful behavior of Shas activists in Israel who burned copies of the Christian Bible, which they allege had been distributed by Christian missionaries. I certainly do not endorse missionizing activities in Israel, but the images of book-burning Jews makes me shudder. It is immoral for any Jew to act this way. For a religious Jew to do so is a chilul HaShem — a desecration of God’s name. Those Jews who burn books make a sham out of their personal piety.

I shudder at the irony of religious and committed Jews burning any books, whatever their content. Even if they do not remember the Holocaust, I do.

When German Nazi soldiers and civilians burned books in 1933, that action was widely condemned, especially by Jews. That act pained us to the core. For the People of the Book, the mere idea of burning a book is destructive. The act itself inflicts an indelible wound.

I shudder at the irony of Jews burning religious books. Whether the text is holy to Jews is irrelevant. The texts that were burned are holy to Christians. Imagine how any Jew would feel if non-Jews burned our sacred texts because they disagreed with them.

We Jews, whose ancestors have lived through the Inquisitions, whose very essence was desecrated when Christians burned our treasured Talmud in European cities in the Middle Ages, know the tears that are shed when something holy to us is desecrated.

I shudder at the irony of book-burning in Israel. Israel is more than a homeland for Jews. It is a light unto the nations. Israel must not permit revered rabbis who condone sin — much less those who encourage it — to go unchallenged. Israel must not permit misguided reactionaries to go unpunished, even if those misguided reactionaries, ironically enough, are the revered rabbis. Book-burning in Israel is an attack on all that Israel stands for.

I shudder at the irony of silence. We know what happens when good people remain silent and evil edges out good. Israel and Jews throughout the world must condemn this atrocious behavior and take the bold and necessary steps to ensure that this occurrence remains a singular nightmare.

As her three-and-a-half-year-old comatose son continued to lie in his hospital bed, a Jerusalem woman was indicted Sunday by the Jerusalem District Court of abusing him and his four-and-a-half-year-old brother.

The court also indicted a family friend accused of conducting a "tikkun" (exorcism) on the children under the influence of a rabbi who fled to Canada.

Shortly after the indictment was submitted, the remand of another suspect involved in the affair was extended. The man, a acquaintance of the mother, allegedly took part in the abuse.

According to the indictment, "During the months of February and March, the accused and her children moved to her mother's apartment in Jerusalem. During this period, the mother found it difficult to cope with the burden of raining her small children, and particularly with their education.

"The defendant turned to a rabbi and asked for his advice in terms of his children's education. The rabbi concluded that the children were 'possessed' with evil spirits and advised the defendant and other suspects to carry out 'tikkunim' on the children in order to help them get rid of those demons."

The indictment went on to say that the rabbi instructed the mother to conduct "tikkunim" on the children – "meaning, jolting, beating, tying, burning organs, feeding them with faeces, and more.

"Two of the suspects were put in charge of educating the children, and systematically abused them and the defendant's other children in a large number of cases, for a long time, claiming that these 'tikkunim' were aimed at removing these evil spirits from the children."

Some of the acts of abuse were also described in the indictment. "The defendant, who knew about the abuse, continued to desert her children."

The mother was accused of "cooperating with some of the other suspects in forcibly jolting the children in at least 40 cases, grasping them in the back or shoulders, or grasping them in their hands and legs and shaking them with their heads moving back and forth and from side to side.

"The defendant and the other suspects also used to tie the children's hands and legs with plastic restraints and ropes for many hours, as well as hit one of the children in the face and bend his hands behind his back, throwing him in the air."

'Police veterans were shocked'

In one of her remand hearings, the police representative presented the judge with a photo album containing shocking pictures of the children.

"The Jerusalem Police veterans found it difficult to listen to such a shocking story," a police representative said during the previous hearing.

The mother admitted to the suspicions and went back on her confession, while the father and another person arrested denied the allegations.

"Evidence submitted to the court testifies to a long and harsh abuse," a police representative said during the hearing.

The small son, who was hospitalized at the Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital's intensive care unit, suffers from brain damage which has left him in a vegetative state.

PARIS (European Jewish Press)---France’s Chief Rabbi Joseph Sitruk said he "perfectly agreed" with the idea of President Nicolas Sarkozy that each pupil in the last year of French primary school "adopts" the memory of one of the 11,000 French Jewish children killed in the Holocaust, learning about the child's background and fate.
"I perfectly agree with the idea of Nicolas Sarkozy,” the rabbi told Monday private French tv station I-télé, calling Sarkozy’s idea "nice" and "generous."

He said the idea will allow the children of France to better understand a phenomenon which affects them and which is a considerable stake.”

It is the first time the chief rabbi gives his opinion since the presidential announcement last Wednesday at the annual dinner of CRIF, the representative body of Jewish organizations in France.

He said that “it is not a topical problem, so there is no emergency to take a position.”

He added: “The idea is simply to realize that the Shoah, the Nazi genocide of the Jewish people, is not the problem of the Jews, it is a problem of society.”

"There is a drama which does not cease lasting, that of all massacres which were since perpetrated", he said.

“Nothing is comparable with anything, but there were so many misfortunes in the world, danger is still there, and the humanity did not understand what Shoah could mean as a considerable teaching,” Sitruk said.

For the rabbi, "the president wanted to make understand to our country that the memory transmission was almost a ‘state affair’, the affair of all.”

He suggested to the government to launch a commission of specialists, teachers, former deportees and resistance fighters.”

"Education will save our country, nothing else ", Sitruk said.

The Pope and the Rabbi "Debate" Charade Continues to Play Out

The Jerusalem Post has now published an editorial from Rabbi Jacob Nuesner in which he continues the dialectical process under the guise of a debate with Benedict. In the editorial Rabbi Neusner states:

"In the Middle Ages rabbis were forced to engage with priests in disputations in the presence of kings and cardinals on which is the true religion, Judaism or Christianity. The outcome was predetermined. Christians won; they had the swords."

I see. My response to this whopper is that some would say it's Judaics who now hold the swords. Ernst Zundel, Germar Rudolf, Robert Faurisson and the others who have been beaten, imprisoned, fined, had their reputations and careers ruined and otherwise been persecuted for refusing to assent to Judaic "holocaust" dogma could certainly attest to that fact. And coincidentally, the Vatican is presently more rotten with philo-Judaism and crypto-Judaism than it has ever been in history. The Vatican is currently headed by a man who has promulgated a document in which he suggests that Christian interpretation of Scripture should be reevaluated in light of the so-called "holocaust" of "The Jews." This, naturally, is why Rabbi Neusner is now in the mood for a "debate" with the Pope.

On the contrary, Mr. Neusner. The fix is in on this "debate," just as it was in Pfefferkorn's case.

Skipping ahead we come to Neusner's primary objection:

[Jesus] claimed to reform and to improve, "You have heard it said... but I say...." We maintain, and I argued in my book[A Rabbi Talks With Jesus], that the Torah was and is perfect and beyond improvement, and the Judaism built upon the Torah and the prophets and writings, the originally-oral parts of the Torah written down in the Mishna, Talmud, and Midrash - that Judaism was and remains God's will for humanity.

We've already shown that this objection is absurd from Neusner's own writings where he himself explains how the rabbis put their words in their god's mouth. This editorial being meant for public consumption, Nuesner will not make any such revelations therein. There we only get the stock account of the "oral Torah."

But if we turn to Rabbi Nuesner's book, Rabbinic Judaism: Structure and System, we find that the concept of "oral Torah" was developed a few centuries too late for it to constitute a valid basis for his objection.

The complex of rabbinically ordained practices ... including most of the rules for the treatment of Scripture itself--do not derive from Scripture at all. Rabbinic Judaism's initial concern was with the elaboration and refinement of it's own system. Attaching the system to scripture was secondary. It therefore is misleading to depict rabbinic Judaism primarily as a consequence of an exegetical process or the organic unfolding of Scripture. Rather, rabbinic Judaism began as the work of a small, ambitious, and homogeneous group of pseudo-priests ...

By the third century (A.D.) the rabbis expressed their self-conception in the ideology of "oral Torah" which held that a comprehensive body of teachings and practices (halachot) not included in Scripture had been given by God and through Moses only to the rabbinic establishment. (Rabbinic Judaism: Structure and System, Jacob Nuesner, pp. 31-34) as quoted in Judaism's Strange Gods by Michael A. Hoffman II

Not only is the "oral Torah" a complete fabrication of the rabbis, but it was still being developed centuries after Christ as it is clearly stated in Nuesner's book. Therefore Nuesner's objection to Christ--that He changed the Law--falls flat. The rabbis themselves changed the Law and created new laws from thin air and they continued to do so centuries after Christ. They're the worst abrogators of Biblical Law that have ever lived.


Rabbi Nuesner closes thus:

... it really is the one and the same God whom together [Christians and Judaics] serve - in difference ...

The challenges of Sinai bring us together for the renewal of a 2,000 year old tradition of religious debate in the service of God's truth.

Someone once called me the most contentious person he had ever known. Now I have met my match. Pope Benedict XVI is another truth-seeker.

We are in for interesting times.

I can agree with nothing stated here aside from the obvious, that we are living in interesting times.

The ball, apparently, is in the "contentious" Pope Benedict's court, and his dialectical contribution to this farce will certainly be forthcoming.

Rabbi, pope exchange blessings

Pope Benedict XVI was blessed by a rabbi -- and blessed him back -- Thursday in Brazil.

The pope met Reform Rabbi Henry Sobel and other religious leaders during a five-day visit to Sao Paulo.

"With deep humility, I asked for a blessing and was blessed. I also asked for the pope's permission to bless him and was authorized to do so," Sobel said. "I'm feeling very light. It's not everyday that a rabbi gets a blessing from the pope."

Sobel called Benedict "a friend of the Jewish people" who "understands the importance of the interdependence of Christian and Jewish traditions."

With more than 30 years at the helm of Latin America's largest shul -- the 2,000-family CIP -- Sobel gained a strong reputation as a defender of human rights during Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship and is well known in Brazil for attempting to strengthen relations among Jews, Christians and Muslims. Lately he has been in the news after he was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting on a visit to Florida.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- A rabbi who temporarily resigned last month as head of South America's largest Jewish Congregation after being arrested in Florida on shoplifting charges, said he will meet with Pope Benedict XVI when the pontiff visits in May.

Henry I. Sobel, who for more than 30 years led the Sao Paulo Jewish Congregation, was arrested in March on three counts of theft for allegedly stealing ties, with a total value of $680, from several upscale stores in Palm Beach, Fla. He was released after posting $3,000 bail.

Sobel, 63, told the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, in an interview published Friday, that his meeting with the pope -- scheduled before the Palm Beach arrest -- had recently been confirmed.

When members of Mishkan Shalom Synagogue in Philadelphia need inspiration to tackle society's thorny problems, they look no further than a social room named for their late hero: Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

It's a testament to the power of his life and his teaching," Rabbi Jeff Sultar says. In the room, a hanging photo shows the wild-haired rabbi marching in Selma, Ala., in 1965 with Martin Luther King Jr. "It reminds us that spirituality is continuing to steer us back into the world rather than to take us out of it."

This year at the centennial of Heschel's birth, Jews and gentiles alike are remembering him as more than one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. For people of varied backgrounds, he also is an enduring role model.

For the centennial, academics will debate Heschel's significance at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., on March 11-12. Another conference is Sept. 7-9 at the Thomas Merton Center at Ballarmine University in Louisville. Yale University Press will release Volume 2 of his biography ...

Richard John Neuhaus joined with Heschel and peace activist Daniel Berrigan in 1965 to establish the influential anti-war group Clergy Concerned About Vietnam. But today Neuhaus, a Catholic priest and editor of the religion journal First Things, says Heschel's influence on him and society is most clearly felt in Jewish-Christian relations, which Heschel shaped through his role as Judaic consultant to Vatican II at a time when Heschel's Hasidic community forbade theological dialogue with Christians.

The head of Pave the Way, a non-sectarian group in New York, became the first Jewish man to be knighted by two popes.

Gary Krupp was promoted to the highest Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great, receiving the Silver Star in a Jan. 15 ceremony in Rome, after Pave the Way presented important Christian documents to the Vatican Library. Krupp “has encouraged, promoted and achieved high levels of cultural cooperation between Catholic and Jewish institutions,” said Father David Jaeger, the Vatican’s representative to Israel.

Pave the Way says religion should not be a tool for violence, but can help bridge cultural gaps between Israel and the Vatican and between Jews and Christians through education, tolerance and goodwill. Krupp “has never lost his optimism, never allowed anyone else to lose their optimism, and we need that in the world at this time,” Jaeger said.

Rabbi Rosen Invested as Papal Knight

Rabbi David Rosen, the American Jewish Committee's international director of interreligious affairs on Thursday became the first Israeli citizen, the first Orthodox rabbi and the fifth living Jew to be invested with a papal knighthood.

Rosen received the decoration and citation attesting to his new status as a Knight Commander of the Pontifical Order of St Gregory the Great at a ceremony hosted at the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center by the Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine and the Apostolic Nuncio in Israel Archbishop Pietro Sambi.

The investiture was conducted by Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with Jewry. The ceremony coincided with the 40th anniversary celebrations in Israel of Nostra Aetate, the ground-breaking Vatican II document that paved the way for mutual respect and dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Jews.

Kasper credited Rosen with being a moving force in the realization and implementation of the spirit of Nostra Aetate.

Noting that Rosen is active in many fields, Kasper who has known him and worked with him for several years said: "One meets him everywhere that this dialogue is going on - and he keeps the dialogue going on."

He first met Rosen, Kasper recalled, as a Jewish partner in dialogue. He found Rosen to be frank, free and outspoken, saying what pleased him about the Christians and also what didn't
please him.

Kasper characterized Rosen as "a fair partner who wants to understand Christianity" and struggles to overcome misunderstandings and slander. He described Rosen as a man of peace and dialogue who builds bridges.

One of the most positive developments of the last half century said Kasper is that Jews and Christians have found a way to gather. "It is a sign of hope and reconciliation, friendship and mutual understanding."

Kasper made a point of emphasizing that in his work for reconciliation and peace, Rosen is not a man of compromise, but acts from the depth of his Jewish faith ...

... Rosen who was on the team that negotiated diplomatic relations between Israel and the Vatican was pleased to see among the witnesses to his honor Shmuel Hadass, who was Israel's first ambassador to the Vatican.
